Books that Teach Lessons in Creative Ways
I write books that teach important things: daring to dream, standing up to bullies, the value of friendship, and more.
Here are some facts about me and my books:
🐧 One of my favorite childhood stories is “Danny and the Dinosaur” by Syd Hoff. I’ve loved dinosaurs my whole life, so seeing a kid get to spend a whole day with one was pretty much the best thing ever as far as 5-year-old me was concerned. And I’m sure sharing a name with the main character probably didn’t hurt anything!
🐧 The inspiration for “The Penguin Who Learned to Fly” isn’t out of the ordinary. It came from playing with my daughter. Among her legion of stuffed animals (or I guess we call them “stuffies” for short now? I’m old…) are several penguins. One day she was running back and forth with a penguin up in the air and said “Look what the penguin is doing! Isn’t that silly? They can’t fly!”
And, feeling a bit whimsical myself, I thought about what would happen if a penguin really did want to fly. How would he do it? Being a silly notion from the start, it would have to happen in a bit of a silly way. Thus, a story was born.
🐧I love libraries! I don’t know if it’s possible to overstate the importance of libraries. You can learn about almost any subject that you want, or you can escape the real world for a while if needed.
You can go in and have adventures in an infinite number of worlds, whether you’re a kid or an adult or somewhere in between.
And what’s even more incredible is that they really don’t ask you for anything in return; you just need to bring your book back so someone else can share in the adventure too.
